Switch Back from ChromeOS Flex to Windows

ChromeOS Flex is fast and lightweight, but it doesn’t always replace a full Windows system — especially if you need Windows-only software, gaming support, or advanced drivers. If you’ve decided to switch back, the good news is that restoring Windows is completely possible with the right steps. In this guide, I’ll walk you through the full process of removing ChromeOS Flex and reinstalling Windows 10 or Windows 11 safely using a bootable USB drive.

⚠️ This process will erase your entire internal drive, so make sure to back up your important files before continuing.

Before You Start

Before switching back to Windows, take a few minutes to prepare. This process will completely wipe your internal storage, so once you begin, there’s no undo button.

Make sure you have:

  • A USB drive (8GB minimum, 16GB recommended)
  • A stable internet connection
  • Access to another device (optional but helpful)
  • Your important files backed up to cloud or external storage

You’ll also need two main tools:

  • Ventoy Live CD ISO → used to prepare the USB
  • Windows ISO file → used to reinstall Windows

Since ChromeOS Flex doesn’t support traditional USB flashing tools, we’ll use a Chrome extension to write the Ventoy image to the USB first.

Once everything is ready, we’ll start downloading the required files.

Step 1: Download Ventoy Live CD ISO

Because you’re currently running ChromeOS Flex, we’ll use the Ventoy Live CD ISO to install Ventoy onto your USB drive. This method works perfectly on ChromeOS devices.

Open your browser and download Ventoy from the official site:

After opening the site:

  1. Go to the Download section
  2. Download the Live CD ISO file
  3. Wait for the download to finish

This ISO will later be written to your USB drive.

Step 2: Download the Windows ISO File

Now we’ll download the Windows installation file that will replace ChromeOS Flex. Always download Windows directly from Microsoft to avoid corrupted or unsafe files.

Use the button below:

On the Microsoft page:

  1. Scroll to Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO)
  2. Select Windows 11 Multi-Edition ISO
  3. Click Download
  4. Choose your language
  5. Click 64-bit Download

The file is large (around 5–6GB), so the download may take some time.

Once finished, leave the ISO in your Downloads folder. We’ll copy it to the USB later.

Step 3: Install Chromebook Recovery Utility

Since ChromeOS Flex can’t run normal USB flashing software, we’ll use a Chrome extension called Chromebook Recovery Utility to write the Ventoy image to the USB.

Install it from the Chrome Web Store:

After installing:

  1. Click the extension icon in Chrome
  2. Launch Chromebook Recovery Utility
  3. You can now close the browser tab

We’ll use this tool in the next step to create the bootable USB.

Step 4: Zip the Ventoy ISO and Create the Bootable USB

ChromeOS Flex works more reliably with zipped images, so we’ll zip the Ventoy ISO before writing it to the USB.

Zip the Ventoy ISO

  1. Open the Files app
  2. Go to your Downloads folder
  3. Right-click the Ventoy ISO file
  4. Click Zip selection

You’ll now see a new .zip file in the same folder.

Write the USB Using Chromebook Recovery Utility

  1. Insert your USB drive
  2. Open Chromebook Recovery Utility
  3. Click the gear icon (top-right)
  4. Select Use local image
  5. Choose the zipped Ventoy file
  6. Select your USB drive
  7. Click Continue → Create now

⚠️ This will erase the USB drive.

Wait until the process completes. Once finished, your USB will boot into Ventoy Live.

Step 5: Boot into Ventoy Live and Install Ventoy to the USB

Now we’ll boot from the USB you just created and install Ventoy properly onto it.

  1. Restart your computer
  2. As it turns on, press your Boot Menu key

Common keys:

  • F12 → Dell / Lenovo / Acer
  • Esc → HP
  • F2 / F10 / Del → some systems
  1. Select your USB drive
  2. Press Enter

You’ll see the Ventoy boot screen.

Select:

👉 Ventoy Live CD

Once Ventoy loads:

  1. Click Install
  2. Confirm the warning (you may need to click OK twice)

Ventoy will now install onto the USB.

When finished:

  • Close the Ventoy window
  • Restart the computer back into ChromeOS Flex

Your USB is now a proper Ventoy boot drive.

Step 6: Copy the Windows ISO to the Ventoy USB

After installing Ventoy, your USB will now contain a large partition named Ventoy. This is where you place operating system files.

  1. Open the Files app
  2. Go to your Downloads folder
  3. Right-click the Windows ISO file → Copy
  4. Open the Ventoy USB partition
  5. Right-click inside the folder → Paste

Now wait for the copy to complete. The Windows ISO is large, so this may take several minutes.

Once finished:

✅ Your Windows bootable USB is ready.

Step 7: Boot from the USB and Start Windows Installation

Now we’ll boot into the Windows installer.

  1. Restart your computer again
  2. Open the Boot Menu
  3. Select the Ventoy USB drive
  4. Press Enter

You’ll see the Ventoy menu showing your Windows ISO.

  1. Select the Windows ISO
  2. Choose Boot in normal mode
  3. Press Enter

Windows Setup will begin loading.

When the installer appears:

  1. Choose language, time, keyboard
  2. Click Next
  3. Click Install Now

If asked for a product key:
👉 Click I don’t have a product key (you can activate later)

Step 8: Delete ChromeOS Flex and Install Windows

This is the step where ChromeOS Flex is completely removed.

When Windows asks “Where do you want to install Windows?” you’ll see multiple partitions.

These are ChromeOS Flex partitions.

To fully wipe ChromeOS Flex:

  1. Select each partition one by one
  2. Click Delete
  3. Confirm the warning
  4. Repeat until only one entry remains:

Drive 0 Unallocated Space

Now:

  1. Select Unallocated Space
  2. Click Next

Windows will automatically create new partitions and begin installing.

Your PC will restart multiple times. This is normal.

Do not remove the USB until Windows installation finishes.

Step 9: Complete Windows First-Time Setup

After installation finishes, Windows will launch its first-time setup screen.

Follow the on-screen steps:

  1. Select your region
  2. Choose your keyboard layout
  3. Connect to Wi-Fi
  4. Sign in with a Microsoft account
(or choose an offline account if available)
  5. Create a PIN
  6. Adjust privacy settings

Windows will finalize setup and load the desktop.

✅ ChromeOS Flex has now been fully removed
✅ Windows is successfully installed

Final Words

You’ve successfully switched back from ChromeOS Flex to Windows. While ChromeOS Flex is great for lightweight systems, Windows gives you full software compatibility, gaming support, and advanced hardware control.

Now you can reinstall your apps, restore your backups, and use your PC normally again.
